Freddie Gilroy

Freddie Gilroy and the Belsen Stragglers

A view, of the superb iron sculpture on Scarborough's Marine Drive named Freddie Gilroy.

Freddie Gilroy a retired miner on whom the statue is based, was one of the first soldiers to liberate the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany at the end of the war.

Mrs Robinson of Scarborough purchased the sculpture for the good of the town to help with future tourism from it's creator, Durham artist Ray Lonsdale.
